Going on vacation is always a blast. However, if you have a pet that you’d like to bring with you, it can severely limit your options.
Many resorts don’t allow you to bring pets, and some kinds of vacation simply won’t suit your furry friend. A trip to New York, for example, is not something a pet would enjoy.
If you want to bring a pet on vacation with you, you need to look for somewhere with outdoor pursuits and pet-friendly hotels and restaurants.
Read on as we look at ten places in the United States which offer exactly that.
Table of Contents
1. Sanibel Island, Florida
This island getaway is one of Florida’s hidden treasures. It is located off the coast of Fort Myers, Sanibel Island, and offers an abundance of things to do for holidaymakers.
Choose from several stunning walking trails in Pond Apple Park, or go for a bite to eat in the widely-renowned Sanibel Island Farmers’ Market. Both of these options are dog-friendly.
When you’re bringing a dog on vacation, you want to make sure they’re looking their best. The best dog clothes will have your pooch looking great while also feeling comfortable during all activities.
2. Colorado Springs
Everyone has heard of Colorado Springs. However, not everyone realizes how great a destination it is for pet owners.
Many of the area’s major sites, including the Garden of the Gods and the Cripple Creek District Museum, allow pets to enter on a leash. If that doesn’t sound like your thing, Colorado Springs also has some of the best outdoor pursuits in the state, including hiking and mountain biking.
3. South Lake Tahoe, California
Lake Tahoe has shorelines in both Nevada and California. If you go to one of the Nevada resorts, you’ll be able to benefit from the state’s relaxed gambling laws by going to the casinos.
However, we’ve chosen the Californian resort of South Lake Tahoe here because of its relaxed attitude towards pets. Rent a kayak or motorboat with your pet and explore all the aquatic attractions of the area.
4. Bar Harbor, Maine
Bar Harbor is one of the best pet-friendly holiday destinations on the east coast.
There are around 120 miles of hiking trails in the area, many of which look over Maine’s stunning coastline. There are also many dog-friendly beaches in Bar Harbor.
5. Huntington Beach, California
There’s nothing like a trip to the beach to get some rest. Many of America’s beaches have pretty uninviting rules when it comes to cats and dogs; at Huntington Beach, however, your furry friends will receive a warm welcome.
There are several beaches in the area, some of which are designated dog beaches. Some of these hold events throughout the year, with top-class food and drink everywhere you look.
6. Cannon Beach, Oregon
This is one of the more remote locations on this list. If you’d prefer to stay active outdoors on your holiday, this might be the perfect destination.
Cannon Beach has miles of idyllic Pacific coastline. You can run or hike along beautiful beaches and cliffs with your pet every day of your stay. If you’re a little more adventurous, consider renting a boat or kayak to gaze on the coastline from a distance.
If somehow you get tired of the beach, Portland is just a short drive away. While you’re there, you and your furry baby can grab a drink at the Lucky Labrador Brewing Co.
7. Sedona, Arizona
When you ask about the best locations to go to for an outdoor holiday, many of the answers you get will revolve around beaches and coastline. While there’s nothing wrong with that (who doesn’t love the beach?), you also need to consider the hidden gems that lie hundreds of miles from the nearest ocean shore.
Sedona is just such a gem. With some of the most enjoyable hiking trails and mountain biking tracks in the country, you and your pet will have plenty to do. There are also plenty of pet-friendly tours of Sedona’s stunning natural features.
8. Austin, Texas
When you want to holiday with your pet, an outdoor vacation is probably the first thing that springs to mind. However, city breaks are also possible if you pick the right city.
Austin is perhaps the most pet-friendly of America’s major cities. Texas’ capital has a host of activities that you can do with your dog, including an off-leash park called Red Bud Isle Park.
9. Winter Park, Colorado
Another entry on the list for Colorado, Winter Park, will not leave you disappointed.
Despite its name, Winter Park has something to offer year-round. It gets the best of Colorado’s weather in summer, making it a great time to take your pet for a hike around the trails in Vasquez Park Wilderness Park.
10. Seattle, Washington
The last entry on this list is the biggest urban center in America’s northwest. There is much to like about Seattle, whether you’re bringing a pet or not.
There are some beautiful dog-friendly parks dotted around Seattle, including Magnuson Park and the Washington Park Arboretum.
